6 Tips to Getting More Likes On An Instagram Photo

Whether you’re just starting out or an Instagram pro, it never hurts to have a refresher on how to get more likes for your posts. We’ve covered how to improve the look of your overall feed and how to keep your images looking fresh, but let’s take a minute to consider some other factors that will take your number of likes to the next level.

Tip #1: Have great content.

When it comes to getting more likes maybe the most important thing you can do is have really awesome photos. “But, I’m not artistic!,” you say. Don’t panic! Technology is here to help. There are lots of quick and easy ways to improve your Instagram photos. For one, use the grid tool in the Insta app to straighten out your images so they look professional. Instagram also has tons of filters you can apply to your photos (Hefe, Lark, and Rise are some favorites) to boost the contrasts and tone in your pics. There are other great apps, too, that help you edit your photos, like VSCO Cam and Afterlight. These are compatible with Instagram and expand the ways you can change up the look of your photos beyond what’s available in the Insta app. Pro tip: when you’re taking pics, showcase your subject by pointing your camera straight at it. Take time composing your shot eliminating any distracting details that take attention away from what you’re photographing. Remember, chances are the majority of “candid” photos on Instagram are most likely carefully staged, lit, arranged, and edited. Great photos guarantee more likes!

Tip #2: Make use of the hashtag!

Hashtagging is very useful when it comes to making your brand discoverable on Instagram and can up your number of likes in no time. A well-placed #homemadeapplepie can do wonders for your baking company and bring loads of new likers to your page. Technically, you can include up to 30 hashtags in one post – but we advise against using that many. Limit your hashtagging to between 5 and 7 hashtags and include a mix of broad and niche terms. Do some research into what hashtags are trending (by using the search option on Instagram) and try to use some of those that are relevant to your brand. Then, search for particular terms that hit your target audience and incorporate those, too. Finally, a unique hashtag to your brand can be great for engendering buzz around you specifically and can be re-used by your fans to drive traffic to your page.

Tip #3: Post often and regularly.

Posting regularly is a great way to increase your number of likes because you’re offering fans fresh, steady content from you. Studies have shown that there are ideal times to post when people are most engaged with the Insta app. Mondays at 7 PM and 10 PM, Fridays at 1 AM, there are a range of optimal times and days for maximizing your reach and ensuring you get more clicks. Check out the interactive chart here to find out when to post. If you’ve got a cache of photos to post but are short on time, try using a scheduler like Later or Autogrammer.

Tip #4: Show your fans a little love.

The comments section is a great place to initiate and interact with your fans, upping the like-ability of each post. If someone comments on your post, comment back! Thank a fan for their support; re-post something a follower shared (with proper credit, of course); or give a shout out to a follower in the form of an @mention. These kinds of interactions are the real connections that Instagram is all about, which means more likes for you!

Tip #5: Caption your photos.

The caption section is another way to get quick digital approval from fans. Adding a caption to your photo will give your fans something to relate to and think about. Use the caption section to tell them more about your photo or make them laugh. Whatever the caption, the text that you include with your photo allows people to get to know you more and to be supportive of what you and your brand are up to.

Tip #6: Incentivize the like.

Hey, a little nudge never hurt anyone, right? So, why not motivate your fans to ‘like’ a photo by offering them something in return? Create a quick and easy contest that asks fans to ‘like’ a photo to enter to win something (like your product, hint hint) – it’s simple for them to do and promises free stuff, which is hard for anyone to turn down! For you, this kind of contest has a dual pay-off: you get more likes plus the opportunity to get your product out into the world. This can mean more loyalty, more positive word-of-mouth advertising, and ultimately, more customers!

Getting more love on the ‘gram is easy if you know what to do. Combine great content with user interaction and your number of likes is sure to go through the roof. Create beautiful, interesting photos to get things started, and then hashtag, post, comment, and engage with your viewers to increase your chances of getting noticed. With all this in mind you’re sure to get more hearts and clicks.
